Does UniFi need a subscription?
No. The UniFi controller is included with the hardware — there are no per-device licence fees. Optional paid extras exist for remote support and cloud backup, but a standard network runs without them.

What a UniFi Network Is Made Of
A UniFi site is normally a gateway, one or more PoE switches and the access points they power, all adopted into a single controller. Getting the mix right first time is mostly about PoE budget and uplink capacity rather than the access points themselves.

Questions We Are Asked Most
Do I need a Cloud Key if I buy a Dream Machine?
No. The Dream Machine and Cloud Gateway models host the controller themselves. A Cloud Key is for estates that keep their existing router and still want a hardware controller.
Do UniFi access points need a controller?
They need the UniFi Network application to be configured, but it does not have to run all the time. A Dream Machine or Cloud Gateway hosts it on the device itself; otherwise it can run on a Cloud Key, a small server or a hosted VM. Once configured, access points keep working even if the controller is offline.
How many UniFi access points do I need?
As a rule of thumb, one access point covers roughly 100–150 m² of open office, but walls, ceiling height, user density and the applications you run change that a lot. Send us a floor plan and headcount and we will do a coverage estimate before you buy — it is the difference between a network that just works and one with dead spots.
How is a UniFi access point installed and set up?
The access point is cabled to a PoE switch (or injector), then adopted into the UniFi Network application where you set the WiFi name, password and VLANs. We can supply them pre-configured so they adopt automatically when plugged in on site, which is how we handle multi-site rollouts.
Can UniFi handle multiple sites?
Yes. Sites are grouped in one console with site-to-site VPN between gateways, which is why multi-branch organisations use it. We design the addressing and VPN before anything ships.
Is UniFi suitable for business use, or is it consumer kit?
It is business kit. We deploy it across offices, schools, warehouses and hospitality. Where an environment needs guaranteed SLAs or deep security inspection we will say so and quote Meraki or FortiGate alongside it.
