Does UniFi need a subscription?
No. The UniFi controller is included with the hardware — there are no per-device licence fees. Optional paid extras exist for remote support and cloud backup, but a standard network runs without them.

What a UniFi network is made of
A UniFi site is normally a gateway, one or more PoE switches and the access points they power, all adopted into a single controller. Getting the mix right first time is mostly about PoE budget and uplink capacity rather than the access points themselves.
- Cloud Gateway or Dream Machine — routing, firewalling and the built-in controller
- UniFi PoE switches — power and uplinks for access points, cameras and door readers
- U6 and U7 access points — Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 coverage for offices, warehouses and hospitality
- Cloud Key or self-hosted controller where the gateway does not host it
Choosing gateways and controllers
The gateway decides your routed throughput, IDS/IPS capability and how many devices the controller can comfortably manage. We size it on internet speed with threat management switched on, not on the headline figure.

Questions We Are Asked Most
Do I need a Cloud Key if I buy a Dream Machine?
No. The Dream Machine and Cloud Gateway models host the controller themselves. A Cloud Key is for estates that keep their existing router and still want a hardware controller.
Can UniFi handle multiple sites?
Yes. Sites are grouped in one console with site-to-site VPN between gateways, which is why multi-branch organisations use it. We design the addressing and VPN before anything ships.
Is UniFi suitable for business use, or is it consumer kit?
It is business kit. We deploy it across offices, schools, warehouses and hospitality. Where an environment needs guaranteed SLAs or deep security inspection we will say so and quote Meraki or FortiGate alongside it.
