Overview

Cisco Meraki MX Security Appliances and Cloud-Managed Firewalls

The MX is a firewall, SD-WAN router and branch gateway in one cloud-managed appliance. We size it on inspected throughput and the number of VPN tunnels it will carry, then quote the security licence that unlocks the features you actually asked for.

Choosing the right MX model

MX sizing is driven by concurrent users, WAN throughput with security services on, and how many site-to-site tunnels terminate on the box. Undersizing shows up as slow browsing once content filtering and IPS are switched on.

  • MX67 and MX68 — small branches, home-based managers, retail units
  • MX75 and MX85 — medium sites with dual WAN and higher tunnel counts
  • MX95 and MX105 — head office and larger campuses
  • MX250 and MX450 — data centre concentration and hub roles

SD-WAN across your sites

Auto VPN builds the site-to-site mesh for you, and SD-WAN policies steer voice and business applications onto the best-performing link. It is the main reason multi-site organisations move to MX from traditional routers.

  • Auto VPN mesh or hub-and-spoke built from the dashboard
  • Per-application path selection across broadband, fibre and 4G/5G failover
  • Automatic failover with voice traffic protected first

Security licensing that matters

Enterprise licensing covers the firewall, VPN and SD-WAN. Advanced Security adds IDS/IPS, content filtering, AMP and geo-blocking. We tell you which controls you need instead of defaulting everyone to the higher tier.

  • Enterprise versus Advanced Security compared against your requirements
  • IDS/IPS, AMP and content filtering where the risk justifies it
  • Warm-spare pairs quoted where an outage is not acceptable

FAQs

Questions We Are Asked Most

How does the MX compare with a FortiGate?

The FortiGate gives deeper security control and higher inspected throughput per pound. The MX gives simpler multi-site management and faster rollout. We quote both when a client is genuinely undecided.

Can the MX replace our branch routers?

In most cases yes — it handles routing, firewalling, VPN and SD-WAN in one appliance, which usually removes a separate router at each branch.
